    Re: 7x57 reloading

Thanks for the tip about making proper fitting brass from 8x57. I just noticed the same thing with regard to positioning of the shoulder last night during the debate when I had an 8x57 and a 7x57 standing next to each other. Both were commercial soft points and the difference in shoulder position was just about exactly as much as the gunsmith told me my M-93 Mauser was out of spec. I wondered how on Earth a bolt could setback that much without breaking the receiver or the bolt. Well, now I know, it didn't. Makes me wonder when the cartridge dimensions were altered because I have a bunch of 43 vintage Brazilian 7mm and it is the shorter version.

Hello friend..... I've finally figured out how to make a reply using this Yuko deal... I'm afraid to go back to look for your handle for fear of not getting back here anytime soon..lol.. Anyway I've read somewhere it may have been in the1920s that German ammo manufacturing changed the dimensions... as I said... I've never heard the reason why.. Quoting from an article in "The American Rifleman" April 1956 issue pg 31 " Our Remington informant also states: Prior to 1933 the muzzle velocity of 7mm ammunition with 175 grain metal case bullet was approximately 2300 feet per second.Since that date commercial 7mm ammunition has been loaded to a muzzle velocity of approximately 2490 feet per second with a somewhat higher pressure level. Such ammunition is intended for use in modern bolt action type arms of suitable and modern design." To my way of thinking 1933 seems like it would have been a good time to change the case dimensions to reflect the pressure changes.. but I certainly wouldn't have SHORTENED the case! ... If I can help anymore let me know.. Jim
